Vaitheeswaran Koil Sri Vaidyanathar Temple

Vaitheeswaran kovil is a Shiva temple located 7 km from Sirkazhi of Nagapattinam district. The temple is located between Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai. The main deity is called 'Sri Vaidyanathar' which means healer of diseases. The female deity/consort/thaayar of Vaitheeswaran temple is 'ThillaiNayagi'. It is firmly believed that the prayers offered to Lord Shiva in the form of Vaidyanathar can cure many diseases. It is also famous for being one of the important temples of 'Navagraha' which is dedicated to planet Mars. This temple is about 1000-2000 years old.

According to history, one of the navagrahas 'Mars' was suffering from leprosy and he came to this temple and prayed Lord Shiva sincerely. Thereafter he was cured from his disease. For this reason, they have a separate shrine for Mars in this temple. The female deity thillainayagi accompanies lord vaidyanathar with a vessel containing medicinal oil, which can cure any type of disease. It is also believed that Jatayu was cremated in this temple by Lord Rama as per Jayatu’s request after being killed by Ravana while preventing abduction of Sita Devi. There is a pond in this temple known as 'JayatuKundam'.

Lord Shiva in this temple is swayambumurthi, which means it was created on its own. The five towers of this temple lie in a straight line. The maragatha lingam (emerald lingam) is very famous in this temple. There is also a shrine separately for Dhanvantari, the divine healer. The holy waters of the Siddhamirtham tank within vaitheeswarankovil complex contains nectar. The nectar or the jaggery has the capacity to cure skin diseases. Therefore devotees take a holy dip before entering the temple complex.

Devotees normally carry rock salt and black pepper and offer it to lord outside the shrine and wish for good health and well-being. Some devotees also dissolve jaggery in the temple pond which is said to dissolve lung congestion, heart block etc. But to protect the temple pond from pollution nowadays these practices are not allowed.

The temple is world famous for its palm astrology, which is referred as Naadi Josiyam by localites. There is a belief that past, present and future of human lives was predicted by Hindu sages during ancient time. The author of these leaves is believed to be Agathiyar, a Hindu sage. These naadi leaves are now possessed by astrologers in the vaitheeswaran temple and is passed on to their next generation.

The temple is maintained by Dharmavaramaadheenam, a mutt located in Mayiladuthurai town. The temple is usually crowded during pradosha days. The 10th day of thaitamil month is dedicated to Lord Selvamuthukuruswami (Lord muruga) with a daily procession during Januar-February months. Karthigai and kantha Shashti is well celebrated in this temple. Brahmotsavam is also celebrated grandly in this temple during tamil month panguni. The magnificence of this temple is praised by Sambandar, Thirunavukkarasar, Arunagirinathar and so on. This is the 16th Lord Shiva temple that is on the Cauvery river banks praised in thevaram and thirupugazh and is one of the “paadalpetrasthalam”.
